Box Score 1 | Box Score 2CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Norfolk State University softball team faced the Royals of Queens University of Charlotte in a doubleheader on Saturday, losing game one, 1-0, and game two, 4-2.
In game one, Maddy Morris pitched a complete game for the Spartans (0-10) only allowing one run in the first inning before pitching five consecutive scoreless innings.
Morris (0-4) faced 26 batters and recorded two 1-2-3 innings in 6.0 innings of play. Emree Sky Obispo and Julia Kearney each recorded a hit for the Spartans in the loss.
In game two, the Spartans fell down 3-0 in the third inning. They rallied with a run in both the fourth and sixth innings but were unable to close the gap on the Royals (6-6).
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth Brierra Tyler was able to capitalize on an error by the second baseman to reach which scored Kira Turner from second. The Spartans were only down 3-1 after the fourth. Turner came in to pinch run for Loren Hudson who reached on a fielder’s choice in her at-bat.
In the sixth, the Spartans scored one run on two hits and one error to bring themselves within one run of the Royals, 3-2. Two singles from both Hudson and Rylie Gilbreath put two runners on for the Spartans with a fielder’s choice, a passed ball, and an error by the third baseman in consecutive at-bats scoring a run for the Spartans, putting them down only 3-2.
A reassurance run in the sixth by the Royals secured them the win, 3-2.
Aniyah Michalak, Hudson, Gilbreath, and Maya Johnson each secured a hit in the game. Sheehan and Tyler each recorded RBIs. Kailey Bryant (0-2) pitched 5.1 innings for the Spartans facing 24 batters.
Coming up – The Spartans will play a doubleheader against North Carolina A&T at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
